Bulgarian men shall be allowed to have paternity leave

Amendments in the Labor Code and Social Insurance Code foresee that Bulgarian man will also be allowed to have paternity leave. The amendments are initiated by the Ministry of Labor. In that way fathers will be able to participate together with the mothers in taking care of the newborn baby in his first weeks.

Fathers will be able to use 15 days paid leave for taking care of their newborn child and shall receive 90% of their salary. This is foreseen by one of the amendments' versions. There is another option which stipulates that the nine months maternity leave could be split between the two parents. So during the first three months the mother could use her maternity leave, the second three months the father and for the last three months the parents could decide who stays at home and takes care of the baby.

The paid maternity leave is 90% of the salary.

The amendments shall be formed as a bill for paid paternity leave which shall be entered for discussion in the Ministry Council. From the Ministry of Labor declared that probably the amendments shall come into force in the beginning of the next year.
