The first Balkan conference takes place in Sofia, Bulgaria

The first Regional Conference for Collaboration and Stable Balkan Progress was conducted in Sofia on the 4th of July. Bulgaria was represented by the Minister of European Matters - Gergana Grancharova. Bulgaria was chosen to host because it is a stable land on the Balkans, according to Mr Ponsen /French ambassador/. He also notified that our country could be a good example to other wanting to become a part of the European family. The conference was organized by the French embassy as a part of the French EU Presidency. The embassy worked in partnership with the National Association of Bulgarian Municipalities, under the patronage of the Metropolitan Municipality. Among all 17 guests, who were invited, were representatives of local authorities from Albania, Greece, Macedonia, Serbia, Turkey, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro. 170 people all took part in the conference. The problems discussed were: regional collaboration, environmental preservation, experience exchange, increasing local authorities' qualification, energy efficiency, heritage management, social activities, appropriate European funds assimilation, building infrastructure and other questions of present interest.
