The Bulgarian government approved amendments in the Bulgarian Identity Documents Act
Last update: 2009-09-01 00:40:12
The Bulgarian government passed the amendments in the Bulgarian Identity Documents Act and the parliament is preparing to start their issuance. Most of the amendments are provoked by the EU standards for security of identity documents and the requirement that documents must contain biometric data. The issuance technology that will be used for these documents will be very different from the technology used for the older documents. Documents will be divided into three groups: identity documents, driving license for motor vehicles, residence documents. Documents for residence are divided according to their function: permission for continuous or permanent residence of foreigners; certificate of residence for EU citizens, citizens of the countries - parties to the European economic area agreement, citizens of Switzerland and members of their families who are not citizens of the EU, EEA or Switzerland. With these amendments the Council of Ministers is trying to eliminate the existing contradictions between the provisions of the current Bulgarian Identity Documents Act and other acts.
